Community Councils are the most local tier of statutory representation in Scotland. They bridge the gap between local authorities — in our case Aberdeenshire Council — and communities, and help to make public bodies aware of the opinions and needs of the communities they represent. Its presence is vital to ensure Inverbervie gets its voice heard and to ensure the community gets a share of the local authority funds available.
Their primary purpose is to ascertain and express the views of the community to the local authority and other public bodies. The Community Council can also involve itself in a wide range of other activities including fundraising, organising community events, undertaking environmental and educational projects and much more.
Aberdeenshire Council and other bodies consult with the Community Council on issues affecting the community. These issues depend to a large extent on what is important to each community; however, local authorities are required to consult Community Councils on planning applications and many choose to involve them in the Community Planning process. The task of any community council is to identify the needs and aspirations of its community and to take decisions that will lead to appropriate action in that community.
The Community Council is non-party-political, representative of the whole community rather than any political affiliation. Membership is open to anyone aged 18 or over who is either resident in Inverbervie or a business owner with an address within the Royal Burgh. In addition, 2 places on the council are available to young people aged 14–18. All meetings are open to the public.
The Royal Burgh of Inverbervie Community Council meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, except December and July, in Bervie Burgh Chambers on Church Street.
The next meeting will be on — at 7:30pm.
There are up to 10 elected Community Councillors representing Inverbervie. You may speak to any of them to raise an issue on your behalf to discuss at the next meeting.
